Designing Bathroom #3

Our original house had two bathrooms which, I think, was plenty. But another bathroom couldn’t hurt and people like extra toilets! So we added another bathroom as an en suite to the new downstairs bedroom — now known as Bed 3 / Bath 3.

I’ve been kicking around some ideas for the design of this bathroom. It has one window above the vanity and a pocket door between the vanity and toilet/shower area. It’s cozy but a very comfortable size and I’d like to do something fun with the finishes… specifically I’d like to get some fancy tile.

Proposed Tile | Floor: DIAMOND ANTIQUE MATTE SEALED 8" Wall: VERTICAL STACKED WHITE SUBWAY

I’m in love with this DIAMOND ANTIQUE MATTE SEALED 8" Terracotta Tile from Clay Imports. I’ve loved terracotta ever since my parents ooh’d and awe’d over it on our frequent trips to Baja California, Mexico. It’s so charming and warm and a pleasure to walk on bare-footed. It also evokes feelings of my hometown in breezy beachy southern California … but this shape makes it a little more modern and chic.

I’d like to pair it with a vertical stacked matte subway tile … 2”x 8” would be ideal but if I splurge on the floor at $15 sq/ft, I will probably go with a standard 3” x 12” from Floor & Decor so that I can keep it under $3 / sq ft. Basically, I want to copy much of this.

A couple other finishes to consider: a copper sink (gift from family), Illuminate Vintage wall sconce, Ikea medicine cabinet and vanity.

I love the Ikea Godmorgon medicine cabinets and have purchased nothing else since 2009 — it’s the best price point for the size and utility even though they are wall mounted and not recessed (we will figure out a solution for that).

I have a couple fixtures from Illuminate Vintage, based in Houston, and love the quality and customer service so I will give them my business again.

And the vanity in the pic is West Elm but mainly an inspo pic; Joe is probably going to make a vanity to accommodate the sink and we’ll pair it with wall mounted fixtures maybe in black, maybe in chrome/brushed nickel which - as a clever friend said recently - is like the blue jeans of fixture finishes: always works.

I’ll definitely do a before and after post for this and every room but in the meantime … thoughts?
